Description

Sewing is a valuable tool in the slow fashion movement, whether you repair your own clothes, alter secondhand garments, or create your own. If you've been wanting to learn to sew, but don't know where to start, this class is for you!

In this 4 week, 8 hour class you learn how to use your sewing machine (or a sewing machine that we provide) and the basics of hand sewing by creating a lined tote bag.

In a small group setting, this class will teach you and give you time to practice how to:

  • thread your machine

  • wind bobbins

  • work with basic machine sewing principles and tools

  • use different seam finishes

  • create a lining

  • box corners

  • work with iron on interfacing

  • choose appropriate fabric for your projects

  • relax and have fun with the process of sewing!

Class takes place at the Eleventh House Vintage Shop + Studio located at Mills 58 in Peabody on the following Wednesday evenings from 6-8 PM: April 9, 16, 23, and 30.

Starting to Sew is taught by Jennifer Cunha, a tailor with over 40 years of experience, sewing for herself and also teaching those who are curious to learn. She has taught all levels of sewing, from children to adults. She has founded several small businesses, sewing and selling home furnishings, custom cushions, curtains, handbags, and children's clothing – always with an eye towards sustainability and careful crafts(wo)manship. Currently, Jennifer works from her sewing studio in Rockport designing and crafting bespoke garments for her friends, family, and clients, and performing alterations for formal garments of various kinds.
